John A. Evanko Obituary
John A. Evanko, 82, of Mentor, passed away Aug. 15, 2013, at his home.
He was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Cleveland, to the late John and Helen (Deak) Evanko.
Mr. Evanko was the founder and president of J-Way Construction and Enterprise Door and Supply. He served as chief elder of The Hungarian Reformed Church in Fairport Harbor for nine and half years. He was also a 50-year member of Willoughby Lodge 302 F and AM, past master of Pentalpha Lodge F and AM in East Cleveland, past potentate of Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland in 1993, and member of Eagle Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland and Painesville Elks Lodge 549.
John was devoted to his family, faith and fraternal organizations. He loved his country and the American flag. He enjoyed his vegetable and flower gardens, and working around his home.
Mr. Evanko served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn J. (Gecse) Evanko; son, Tim (Cheryl) of Mentor; daughter-in-law, Susan Evanko of Virginia; grandchildren, Timmy, Tony and Amy; sister, Ilona (Bill) Grieve of Willowick; nephews, William and Michael Grieve; sister-in-law, Carol DePanicis; niece, Michelle (Joe) Plakosh; many dear cousins and lifelong friends, as well as his loving dog, Alexa.
Mr. Evanko was preceded in death by his son, John A. Evanko.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave. (opposite Lake Erie College), Painesville. Willoughby Lodge 302 of F and AM will conduct Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Hungarian Reformed Church, 601 Plum St., Fairport Harbor, with the Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi officiating. Interment will take place in Mentor Cemetery following with military honors.
Memorial contributions are suggested to The Hungarian Reformed Church, Hospice of the Western Reserve, or Shriners Children's Hospitals.
