Mercedes A. Brittain, 80, of Mentor, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Hospice House in Cleveland, surrounded by her loving family.|
Born April 19, 1933, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Richard X. and Mercedes A. (nee Calvey) Holmes.
On Sept. 1, 1956, Mercedes married Virgil R. Brittain Jr., her loving husband of 57 years. She was a Mentor resident and graduated from Mentor High School. She received her R.N. nursing degree from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, and attended Lake Erie College in Painesville and Western Reserve University.
Mercedes worked at the Mentor Public Elementary Schools as a R.N. school nurse until her retirement. She was also a member of St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in Mentor. Mercedes was a loving wife and mother, and her life revolved around her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting and spending time with her family and friends. She will be missed dearly.
Mercedes is survived by her husband, Virgil J. Brittain Jr.; her only child, Bridget A. Brittain of Mentor; and brothers, Michael Holmes of Mentor and Patrick Holmes of Florida. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard X. and Mercedes A. Holmes; brothers, Robert, Raymond ""Bud,"" and Fr. Delbert; and sister, Patricia.
At Mercedes' request, there will be no calling hours or services.
