MURFREESBORO, TENNESSEE - Douglas Edward Nickerson, age 51, of Lascassas, Tennessee, won a victory over his battle with cancer at home with his family on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.
Born in Abilene, Texas, he is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Cindy Sharp Nickerson, his son Drew (Mary Beth) Nickerson, his daughter Amy Kay Nickerson, and his grandchildren Taylor, Madison, Lincoln, and McKinley Nickerson. Doug is also survived by parents Luke and Marilyn Nickerson, sisters Nancy Nickerson and Laura (Clint) Owens, and brother Bobby Nickerson all of Queen City and Atlanta, Texas; father- and mother-in-law Cliff and Jane Sharp, sister-in-law Candace Sharp, brother- and sister-in-law Drew and Christy Sanford all of Lascassas, Tennessee; nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Atlanta High School of Atlanta, Texas, (class of 1977) and Harding University of Searcy, Arkansas. He played football at Harding University (1977-81) and was a graduate assistant coach.
Doug taught math and drivers' education and coached football and track at Belton High School (Belton), Mexia High School (Mexia), Pine Tree High School (Longview), Northwest High School (Justin), Spring Hill High School (Longview) in Texas, and taught math and drivers' education and coached football and track at Cannon County High School (Woodbury) and Oakland High School (Murfreesboro) in Tennessee.
He will be remembered as a devoted, Godly husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a dedicated coach. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and the outdoors, as well as reading, especially historical novels. He loved all kinds of music and loved worshipping his God with contemporary and traditional hymns. His dry sense of humor and thirst for knowledge will be missed. He was a member of Christian Life Church of Murfreesboro, Tenneesee, and he was a sponsor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes for many years.
In his final year of coaching, Oakland High School won the Class 5-A State Championship in football, and Coach Nick was selected as the Daily News Journal's Coach of the Year for Track and Field.
Visitation will be at Christian Life Church, 745 Cason Lane, Murfreesboro, TN, 37128 from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, November 20, 2010. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Cliff Sharp and Pastor Ron Kairdolf officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be made in Doug's honor to Greenhouse Ministries at 309 South Spring Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

Coach Nick could inspire you with his look on a Friday night. I am glad i had the opportunity to play for coach Nick. You made a great impact on my life and i thank you for that. I know that you are in a better great place and will be looking for you when i get there.

Coach Nick was one of the most positive influences I have had in my life. He always believed in me no matter what, and for that I will forever be grateful to him. He was a GREAT man and will truly be missed. My prayers go out to all his family. May God bless each one of you.

I played football with Doug at Atlanta High School and threw discus with him for three years on the track team. He was a fierce compeitior. He was a leader on and off the field. Although we have not kept in touch over the years, it is the nice to read all of the personal comments about his character and to hear about his success as a coach. It is probaly the most un-suprising thing I will hear this year.
My prayers for his father (my "Coach Nickerson")and for his family.

To the Nickerson family, may God bless you and comfort you through these times. I had the oppurtunity to student teach at Spring Hill where I meet coach, and he took me under his wing. coaching in West Texas. Our families crossed paths many times and two of my children, Ken Turner and D'Andrea Turner Parker, attended Atlanta schools with Doug. I knew he would grow up to be a fine man like his father, and I am not at all surprised by the many tributes in this guest book. It seems apparent that he touched many lives and only in the most beautiful and profound ways. My thoughts are with the family at this time. Coach Nick was truly a fine man: a teacher, coach, husband, father, and friend to so many. He inspired us with his courage and positive outlook on life especially when faced with cancer. Sweet, sweet Cindy, Drew, Amy Kay & family... There are so many wonderful memories! I'll never forget when Rachael learned that "Uncle Doug and Aunt Cindy" really weren't related by blood! Ha! Coach Nickerson was my Geometry teacher in 1984-1985 at Pine Tree in Longview. I will always be grateful for his patience and kindness to me. Coach helped me alot with tutoring and encouraged me with running track. Heaven received a Great man!!

Doug Nickerson was a good man. He had a heart of gold and heart for God.
I remember him from high school, but I really got to know him in church.

I remember many things my coaches said to me, but one of the most memorable things Coach Nick did for me was take me aside one day to correct me on something I said. He could have publically embarrassed me but he didn't. He simply asked if he could take me aside, told me what I said was offensive and why it was, and then shook my hand and walked away. I can only name a few men who've made an impression in my life, he was one of them. He was a great man. We'll miss you coach Nick.

Coach Nickerson is one of the best men I know. It was a pleasure to work under him his last year at Cannon. He was not only a colleague, but a friend to a young coach just getting started. Thanks to Doug and Cindy for how they modeled how a football coach and his family should be like. Doug is an inspriration to me and I will never forget the impact he had on my life.

Coach Nickerson was my 10th grade math teacher (1985-86) at Pine Tree in Longview. He was a very nice man and I remember his smile the most. It's nice to know He loves Jesus and will be with Him forever :)
