LONGVIEW — Hayden Rex Mayfield, 90, of Longview, Texas, passed away July 5, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Mayfield was born May 20, 1923, in Mount Enterprise, Texas, to Will T. and Artie Bell Mayfield. He served his country during World War II
, joining the U.S. Marines and fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima.
When he came back from the war, he found the love of his life, Mary Ann Datel, and they were married February 8, 1947, in Baytown, Texas. He worked as an electrician for Amoco Pipeline Co. until his retirement in 1985. He was a 50-year member of the Pine Tree Masonic Lodge, a past president of the local OCAW Union and a past coach of the Warriors little league baseball team. He enjoyed any number of reasons to be outside, from watching grandkids' ball games to hunting, fishing or gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Mayfield; sons, Roy Mayfield and his wife, Linda, of Tyler, Billy Mayfield of White Oak and David Mayfield of Athens; brothers, Bob Mayfield and his wife, Gretchen, of Plano, and Kenneth Mayfield of Bryan; sister, Wanda Opersteny and her husband, Eugene, of Bryan; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and grandchildren, Kyle Mayfield and Mikki Mayfield.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, July 8, 2013, at the funeral home.
