LONGVIEW — Jerome Martin "Jerry" Haynes, age 84, died peacefully Monday morning in Longview, Texas, surrounded by his family. He was born January 31, 1927, in Dallas, Texas.
Jerry graduated from Southern Methodist University after attending Louisiana State University and Yale.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Doris Gibson Haynes; his children: daughter, Carla and her husband, Jack Mann, of Longview; son, Gibson and his wife, Melissa, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; son, Andrew and his partner, John Brattin, of New York, N.Y.; and as "PeePaw" to his grandchildren: Andrea and her husband, Jason Doornbos, Molly and her husband, Kyle Hughes, Matthew, Curtis and Satchel; and great-granddaughter, Sidney Doornbos. He is also survived by his sister, Dr. Mary Hayden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louise Schimelpfenig and Fred Haynes; and his brothers, Maj. Gen. Fred Haynes, Dr. William Haynes and Hal Haynes.
Well known for his many professional accomplishments, he will always be remembered for his great love of family, his involvement in the Dallas theatre community, his work with countless charities, his love of sports, but most especially for his role as Mr. Peppermint. Jerry embodied goodness and a peaceful nature. He was a comforting, wise and loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a unique gift of expressing love, dignity and grace to everyone he came in contact with. He was respected as a man that always gave more than he took.
Services will be in Dallas at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011, at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church.
