Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Pierce, 89, of DeLand passed away November 16, 2012 at Hospice of Volusia / Flagler after a brief illness. Libby moved to DeLand from Sycamore, Georgia in 1927. She was the eldest daughter of the late Horace H. Smith and Louise Fountain. She attended DeLand High School, graduating with the class of 1942, where she played basketball and was head cheerleader. She worked as a bookkeeper at Volusia Ford Tractor intermittently for 50 years. Libby belonged to DeLand Garden Club and served as president of DeLand BPOE Lady Elks. She was an avid supporter of Harry Anna Children's Hospital Charities. She enjoyed NASCAR, baseball, was an enthusiastic fisherman and loved to cut a rug. Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by a sister, Jeanette (Smith) Meisel, Orlando; daughters Betty Lou (Jimmy) Herring, DeLand; Kathy Lewis, DeLand; sons Thomas (Lori) Stone; Orange City and Sam (Debbie) Page; Mobile AL; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Calling hours Sunday, November 18 from 4-6pm at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 East New York Ave., DeLand, Florida. Celebration of Life will be at 11:00am at the Lankford Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, November 19 followed by burial at DeLand Memorial Gardens. The family requests memorial donations made to Halifax Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Care Center Orange City, Florida.
