Funeral service for Shirley Jean Cole Kochis, age 79, of New Smyrna Beach, who died July 22, 2013 in Edgewater, will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 26 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach Chapel with the Pastor Gene Griffith officiating. Burial will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater. Friends will be received from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.
Born in Summit, New York on May 28, 1934 to the late Mildred Mae Freeman and Clarence Garfield Cole, Shirley was a Sunday school teacher at Cobleskill Methodist Church for 8 years before moving to Edgewater in 1977. After moving here she was a substitute teacher at the elementary schools in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill. Later she was a kindergarten teacher at "Lilies", a private school in Daytona Beach from 1989 to 1999. A devoted Christian, she was a member of Fruit of the Vine Fellowship in Oak Hill. Shirley enjoyed singing in the choir, bowling, and volunteering in the nursing home and hospital. A great cook and seamstress, Shirley was the greatest friend to her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Ernest Steven Kochis, Jr. of Port Orange, Christopher Joseph Kochis and his wife Heidi of Edgewater; a daughter Sandra Lynn Raffety and her husband Kerry of New Smyrna Beach; five grandchildren, Crystal Mazzola, Richard Wilkins, Jr., William Joseph Wright, Nicholas Dalton Kochis and Erica Bret Kochis; two great grandsons, Taylor James Wright and Jaxsen Aaron Mazzola; a sister, Beverly Dietz of Cobleskill, New York; two brothers, Gerald Cole of Cobleskill, and Raeburn Cole of Beaufort, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kochis was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Steven Kochis, Sr. In 1998, a daughter, Dawn Jean Kochis Wright in 2007, and granddaughter, Heather Mae in 1984.
