KEITH BARNHART Obituary

Keith "Barney" LaMar Barnhart, 81, passed away December 28, 2012. Mr. Barnhart was born in Walhala, MI April 4, 1931 where he attended local grade school and Custer H.S. He lost his left foot in a train accident in 1945 and despite his handicap was a member of his high school basketball team. Barney also attended Baldwin H.S. in Michigan and was a member of the football team. At age 21 he made a remarkable name for himself in the skating world. He held the bronze bar for figure skating. He appeared in two shows in Red Bank, NJ. He was instrumental in helping many other amputees to get a new lease on life by proving what could be done with a lot of will power and a good fitting prosthesis. In 1947 he was presented a district championship medal by the Michigan School Athletic Association. His schooling was interrupted by hospitalization and moving to New York. He accepted a position as a long distance driver for a produce firm for a route between Chicago, Minneapolis, New Orleans that delivered goods to our troops in Korea, later he received an award for driving 388,000 consecutive accident-free miles by the American Surety Co. of Chicago. Mr. Barnhart graduated from the Guild X-Ray training School in Saranac Lake, NY in 1961. Attended the office of continuing medical education, Quillen Dishner College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University 1982. Graduated from the school of Public and Allied Health, Marshall T. Nave Paramedical School with a degree in Associated Science, East Tennessee State University Johnson City, TN in Radiologic Technology in 1983. On May 6, 1983 he received tenure from the Paramedical School in Johnson City, TN. He was the Interim Director of the Radiologic Tech program at East TN State University in 1984. Received B.S. degree there as well in the spring 1986. He started and was Director of the Cumberland Valley Health Occupations Center and Radiologic Tech School in Pineville, KY 1992. He moved from Rogersville, TN to the Port Orange area in 1992. He was a member of the DeLand and Atlantic model railroad club and held an Aladdins castle card from the International Champions of close-up magic. Mr. Barnhart has donated his body for research to the UCF College of Medicine in Orlando, FL. Mr. Barnhart is survived by his wife of 31 years Sandra Marie (Spinney) Barnhart; daughter Helen L. Barnhart Kirton and son-in law Russell Kirton of Dunedin, FL; step-children Rose Marie Johnston Finley, Fort Worth, TX, Raymond Bradley Johnston, Long Beach, MS; grandchildren Sarah Michelle Finley, Bedford, TX. Heather Renee Finley, Irving, TX., Jason Michael Finley, Fort Worth, TX; great-grandchild Cora Rose Finley, Bedford, TX. He was predeceased by his parents Clarence Orly and Helen Evelyn (Smith) Barnhart.
