Paul Rooy Obituary

Paul was a husband, father, son and friend extraordinaire. He lived 100 yrs in half that time. He was ten persons in one. The son of missionaries, Sid and Mae, Paul spent his childhood in Holland and Argentina where he became fluent in several languages. Paul was one motivated go-getter; with a degree in international business, mechanical engineering and law specializing in patents, trademarks and copyrights. He was a prolific writer and had three published books specializing in aviation travel. As president of FOBSBA he fought hard for economic development in Volusia County particularly New Smyrna Beach through promotion of aviation related activities and businesses. Paul was a kind and caring humanitarian, involved in many community activities. He co-founded the NSB Air & Balloonfest, and was a member of the Airport Support Network, Pilots & Paws, Angel flight, Volunteers Without Boundaries and the engineering society to name just a few. Paul loved flying, his Skymaster was his greatest love and it's not surprising that they went together. With more than 25 years of experience under his belt, he piloted many types of planes from the top of the Americas to the bottom and many destinations in between. Paul called himself the wandering pilot and met his wife Mary when she responded to an ad for a co-pilot. Paul AKA The Big Iguana Island Band, was a versatile musician; besides singing he played several instruments. Actually Paul diverted Mary's interest from aviation to himself with a serenade on their first date. Among his many enthusiasms Paul loved his family and more than anything, his children, David and Michelle. A memorial service will be announced later.

Mary, I have such happy memories of Thanksgiving with you, Paul and family. I was always in awe of the contributions the two of you made in our world. I was very saddened to hear of his tragic accident. May God's Peace be with you and all the family. Stevie Buck

Paul Rooy, demonstrated among so many other attributes, absolute open-mindedness. He never in my hearing ever characterized anyone in terms of stereotypical demographics, and I love that about him. Well, one exception does come to mind: it involves our two-party political system. I'll leave it right there. Thank you, Paul.

Paul was a classmate of mine in high school in Buenos Aires. He was a good guy then, and from his obituary I can tell he turned into a great man. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sorrowful time.

To my old and dear friend who liked to quip that life is a journey and not a destination. Your journey with us may have ended, but memories of you will continue with us for a long time to come.
