Georgia Oliver Akers, 93, of Ormond Beach, passed away at her home on March 16, 2014. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1920, the same year that women first earned the right to vote in the United States. She was a graduate of Washington Seminary, a high school for girls in Atlanta. At Washington Seminary she was an outstanding basketball player and the captain of her team in her senior year. She was also named "Most Athletic" by her classmates that same year. After high school, she attended Mount Vernon College (now George Washington University) in Washington D. C. She earned a letter playing basketball for Mount Vernon where her aggressive play resulted in an unexpected caution from her coach about playing "like a boy". In 1941, after her second year of college, Georgia married her high school sweetheart, Billy Akers. At the end of World War II, Georgia moved with her husband and young son, Will, to the small town of Ormond. Together, Georgia and Billy worked hard to establish a motel known as Coral Sands Beach Cottages. A few years later her second son, John, was born. Georgia lived most of her adult life in Ormond Beach. She was a former member of the Garden Club of the Halifax Country and the Ormond Beach Women's Club. She taught Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church in Daytona Beach, was a charter member of Oceanside Country Club and an active member of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church. While Georgia was interested in local civic affairs, her favorite club was "The Do Nothing Club" which was organized on the simple principle of doing nothing but having a good time with friends. From an early age Georgia loved photography. Over the span of her years she made movie films and took thousands of photographs. Her other loves included playing and watching tennis, traveling abroad, teaching card and board games to her grandchildren and spending time with her friends in Ormond Beach and Atlanta. Billy and Georgia were married for seventy years until Billy's death in 2011. Georgia is survived by her sister, Ida Akers Morris, of Atlanta, her two sons, William Akers, III and John O. Akers, both of Ormond Beach, her two daughters-in-law, Carol Timmons Akers and Jennifer Perkins Akers. She was known as "Gran Gran" or "Grangrino" to three grandchildren, Bethany Akers Muller, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, William Akers, IV, and Jesse Akers Reagin, both of Ormond Beach. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren. All of Georgia's family and friends know that Georgia lived her entire life with the same passion that she brought to the basketball court. A memorial service will be held at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach on April 10, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to the Darcy Akers Scholarship Fund, Ormond Beach Rotary Club, P.O. Box 104, Ormond Beach, FL 32175 or the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church.
