Alvin Remard Hawthorne, Sr., transitioned peacefully to join his mother, Diane Young Browning and his father, Remard Hawthorne in heaven. Born in Daytona Beach, he matriculated in the schools of Volusia County, graduating from Seabreeze Sr. High in 1978 where he excelled on the Sandcrab basketball team. He then went on to play college basketball at Tuskegee University. Enrolled in ROTC, he also became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Once he graduated from Tuskegee University he joined the United States Army
and was commissioned as an officer for 6 years. Alvin taught in the Volusia County School System, Riverview and Mainland Senior High, and coached basketball at Mainland High School and Tuskegee University. Known for his friendly personality, his athletic talents and his love of History, Alvin will be sorely missed by the many friends, fellow athletes, colleagues and students whose lives he touched. He is survived by his son, Alvin, Jr.; two daughters, Tiffiney Irving and Dianna Hawthorne; brother, Walter Browning, Jr. (Sheana); five sisters, Tonya Browning Smith, Sheila Browning and Angela Browning, Donna Hawthorne and Desiree (Calvin); one grandson, Devin Hawthorne. He is also survived by his stepfather, Walter Browning (Norma); one step-sister, Pamela Crawford; one step brother, Christopher Crawford; one god sister, Phyllis Clemons; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be today (Friday, April 11, 2014), from 5 -7 pm at Mt Zion AME Church. The funeral service will be held at Mt Zion AME Church on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 2 pm. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
