CYNTHIA GOETZ SHERMAN

Cynthia of Somerville, MA, passed on peacefully into the arms of her heavenly Father on February 9, 2013. In Memory of our Cynthia, born on May 20, 1945, in East Cleveland, OH. Cynthia was an inspiration to her family, friends and acquaintances. She was known for her kindness, unique free spirit, and her love of learning. She lost her father to an accident when just eleven years old, which prompted the entire family of five children to relocate to Daytona Beach in 1956, joining their grandparents, Eldred and Emma Jane Calvin. Cynthia attended Lenox Elementary and Seabreeze High School, where she graduated in 1963. She loved art, fashion, the beach, animals and her many friends. She was known locally as the girl with a pet mountain lion (puma), Wilhemina, that would romp with her in the waves of Daytona Beach. She attended DBCC receiving her AA degree, and then worked for GE in the printing department. When GE left the area, she returned to study art and architecture at the University of Florida. Cynthia then relocated to Cambridge, MA in 1978, becoming an advocate in the Boston area for the mentally ill raising awareness for individual rights. Her unique outlook on life, positive thinking, activism, Christian Science beliefs and energy helped countless people. She was able to show compassion where others never noticed a friend in need. She was admired as a leader within her circle and considered legendary in her own time. She continued her studies throughout her life and was truly a lifelong learner. Cynthia, on a bright day wearing a white skirt, met Stuart Loring Sherman, the love of her life. Stuart thought upon seeing her for the first time, that she was "love personified". They married soon after. Throughout their twenty plus years together, they had many common interests, especially art, music and religion, which kept them on the go. They loved visiting Cape Cod and the Daytona Beach area. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Goetz Stephenson, as well as her father, Joseph Sidney Goetz. She is survived by her loving husband, Stuart Sherman. She is also survived by her siblings and their respective families, Abby Goetz Mills (Robert) of Wilbur by the Sea, Andrew Goetz (Thelma Loreto), of Andover, NJ, Laurel Goetz Bracey (Stephen) of Las Cruces, NM, and Lisa Goetz Di Nicolo (Roberto), of Ormond Beach. Cindy will be greatly missed by all, but mostly, we were blessed by having her in our lives. We will carry on Cindy's memory by how she loved the beauty of life around her. She would remind us to find joy in our lives and pass it on to others. A Celebration of Life, Memorial Service was held in Cambridge, MA, on February 15th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), Florida, (https://nami360.nami.org)
