Dr. Diane Essex-Sorlie

Dr. Diane Essex-Sorlie died late Monday night on June 3, 2013. She was born in Moline, Illinois. A funeral Mass will be held in her honor at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church in Flagler Beach. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 32 years, William E. Sorlie. She, her husband and 6 cats moved to Florida in 2002 from Illinois. She leaves a daughter Tamara Falvai, a granddaughter Sophie Falvai, a sister Paula Tyra, brother Charles Essex, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Mark Mojonnier, sister-in-law Barbara Houpt and cats Columbo, Torty, Tiger and Nikita. Diane earned a PhD in Educational Psychology and Measurement from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After a distinguished 30 year career of teaching and research at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, she retired in 2001 as a Professor Emeritus in Internal Medicine, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics. She won numerous teaching awards and wrote a published book on Medical Statistics. She was an active member of the Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church and the Tillandsia Garden Club. She was known to have touched the lives of so many who were fortunate to know and meet her. Her giving to others was her life's mantra. She was loved by many and her passing will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church or to the Flagler Cats in Bunnell (a no-kill shelter).
