Dorothy B. (Benwitz) Van Luven, (94), of Port Orange, FL, died on January 3, 2013. She was born August 27, 1918, in Henrietta, NY. Mrs. Van Luven was a volunteer's volunteer, a foster mother to 17 infants & supported the Salvation Army, as well as being a member of the Anzio Beachhead Veterans Association and the Eastern Star in Syracuse, NY. After moving to Port Orange, FL in 1976, she continued her volunteer work with the Hospice Organization where she was recognized as "Volunteer of the Year" in Volusia/Flagler Counties for 1990 & 1993. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, knitting, dress making, and plastic canvas work by which she was able to raise money for charity for many years by making and raffling afghans and other handicrafts. She also spent much of her time taking care of many friends and neighbors during short and long illnesses. At the Daytona Beach Drive-In Christian Church her time and craft talents were used to raise money through sales and raffles. She was also involved in the nursery school, caring for the young people, in addition to being a Deaconess. Mrs. Van Luven is survived by her son William J. Van Luven, Clinton Twp., MI; grand-daughter Judith E. (Alan) Miller, Farmington Hills, MI; grandson W. James, (Candice) Van Luven, Troy, MI; foster son Brian (Kathy) Wallace, Visalia, CA; great-granddaughter Taylor Anne Van Luven, Troy, MI; great-grandsons Logan William and Gavin James Miller, Farmington Hills, MI. She was predeceased by her husband Carleton E. Van Luven Sr., July 10, 1985 and son Carleton E. Van Luven Jr. April 18, 1958. Donations may be made to the Daytona Beach Drive-In Christian Church @ 3140 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores, FL 32116 or to Hospice of Volusia Flagler @ 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Burial will be in Syracuse, NY at a later date.
