He was born on June 25, 1931, in Miami, FL, to Hazel and Elwood B. Sides. His family moved to DeLand, FL, the Carolinas and eventually settled in the Washington, DC area. As the oldest child, he dropped out of school in the 7th grade to help support his mother and four sisters. Later, he returned to school obtaining his GED and completing two years of collegiate studies at the University of Baltimore. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Air Force serving four years on active duty in the Korean War as an automotive mechanic, receiving four medals for his service. He worked various jobs in the Washington, DC area including a short order cook at The Little Tavern, salesman at Colie Mobile Homes, owning and operating a Crown Service Station, distributing Lance Crackers and as an automotive wholesaler. In 1973, he moved his family to New Smyrna Beach, FL, when he purchased Sides Used Cars (AKA Sides Cars & Trucks) from his father. He turned his passion for cars (his mother always said his first word was truck) into a successful business which he owned and operated, in the same location, for over 40 years. He was generous and supported the local community, receiving many accolades over the years including, but not limited to, his commitment to law enforcement agencies and the First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach. He is predeceased by his parents, Hazel and Elwood B. Sides; and sister, Linda Goodenough.
