James Maxwell Wheeler, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM and Port Orange, FL, passed away November 20, 2012. He was predeceased by his parents, Wesley Cornell Wheeler , Ruth Maxwell Wheeler; and his sister, Jane Ann Wheeler Schludecker. Surviving is his loving wife Gayle Ann Crane Wheeler, who he met at his family's resort hotel, The Spencer, at Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua Lake, N and were married in 1954; their daughter, Helen Townley Wheeler. Jim was a United States Army
veteran and a graduate of Florida Military Academy, The University of Miami and the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career in Industrial Management with Step Saver Kitchens and later with Carnegie Mellon University. His library career began as the head of the University of New Brunswick Engineering Library, Fredericton, NB, Canada. He later returned to the states with his family and was the director of the Patterson Library, Westfield, NY. There he made significant strides for that community institution, adding an auditorium and art gallery and scheduling films and recitals. Jim's last position was Director of Volusia County Public Libraries, Daytona Beach, FL., where he implemented the automation program for the county library system and was very involved in numerous building projects and renovations. He retired in 1993. He was active in many civic organizations and past president of the Florida Library Association. An avid reader, Jim enjoyed listening to classical music, swimming, his pets, watching sports and news and history programs. Jim is fondly remembered by his cousins, nieces and nephews, two of whom are his namesake.
