-James Scarlett Rogers, lovingly called "Rip" by all that knew him, 77, passed away on December 28, 2012 at Florida Hospital DeLand. A native of DeLand, Rip remained here throughout his life. He served his country in the US Air Force, where he was stationed in Germany for a time, after which he returned home and attended Stetson University, upon graduation from Stetson he continued his studies at the University of Florida Law School. Rip worked as an attorney for the Public Defender for 25 years before going into private practice. He was an avid golfer, as well as an accomplished motorcyclist. Although he came into motorcycling a little later in life, it quickly became his passion. So much so, that he traveled to the four corners of the United States and returned home on July 3 of 2001 after a month on the road. And he was 65 at the time. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 37 years, Claudia, his step daughter, Connie Moran, niece Valerie Fishbourne, cousins, Alexandra Hess, Shirley Scarlett, Jodi Elizabeth Long, Courtney Storm Moriarty, Michael Dougherty and Marshall Dougherty, Jr. His family will celebrate his life with a memorial service on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Lankford Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 am. There will be a reception to follow at the Grant Bly House. The family has suggested memorials in his name to Journey's End Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 220163, Glenwood, FL 32722 or West Volusia Humane Society, 800 Humane Society Road, DeLand, FL 32720. You are invited to share your memories with the family at www.lankfordfuneralhome.com.
