"Jan" Althouse, 89, long-time resident of Ormond Beach, slipped peacefully into God's hands on January 6, 2013. The hidden jewel of the Althouse family, she graced the lives of family and friends with her love, kindness and devotion. Jan was born in Connecticut of Polish parents, Peter and Helen Novak, from whom she learned the value of hard work and practicality. During World War II
she joined the Navy Waves, serving at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. Jan married Gerald F. Althouse of Danbury, CT in 1945, and the couple moved to Ormond Beach that same year to join Gerry's sister who owned the Villa Sans Souci. In this small town so far from family and the familiar, these first years must have been especially challenging for Jannewly married, with 2 children soon to follow plus assisting in managing the Villa. But, as she would continue to do throughout her life, Jan adapted with quiet determination and resourcefulness. In the late 50's Jan commenced a 20-year career in jewelry sales, working first for Tom Cook Jewelers, Champion Jewelers and finally at son Fred's own Althouse Custom Jewelry. Upon Gerry's retirement in 1981, they purchased and each summer operated Rosemount Lodge & Cottages in Balsam, NC until Gerry's death in 2003. Jan lived her final years with the same dignity, kindness and spirit which had guided her in life. Jan is survived by her daughter Margaret Althouse of Ormond Beach; her son Fred Althouse, his wife Teri and grandson Jon Althouse, all of Ponce Inlet. Condolences to the family may be mailed to 105 Pinion Circle, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. In lieu of flowers, donations to further Gerry's vision for Central Park may be made to "Friends of Ormond Beach Recreation" c/o Leisure Services Dept., 399 No. US#1, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. A memorial service to celebrate Jan's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, 167 Vining Court in Ormond Beach.
