Maxine L. Connell

Maxine L. Connell, 95, passed peacefully in her home in DeLand, on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. She was born December 4, 1918 in Henderson County, Illinois, to her parents Harvey A. and Beatrice Knox Crow. She attended school in New Boston, IL. She married, started a family and then moved to Florida in 1946. She was a devoted mother and homemaker and was very active in school, church and community activities. Maxine worked as a nursing home administrator and a real estate agent. She was a Charter member of the DeLand Country Club and the President of the Ladies Elks Lodge #1463 in DeLand. She and her late husband, James B. Connell, Sr, had 30 wonderful years together enjoying golf, dancing, playing cards and traveling. In addition to her parents and her four husbands, Maxine was pre-deceased by her brother, Warren Crow, Viola, IL and her great grandson Timothy Long, her daughters-in-law, Susan (Julian) and Kathy (Jeff). Maxine is survived by her older sister Dorothaline Berry, Aledo, IL; her four sons, James (Blue) Long, DeLand, Jeffery Long, Deland, John Long (Peggy) Charleston, SC, Julian Long (Caroline) DeLand; her four step-children, Rose Nash (Maurice Bourguin) Farmington, CT, Carolyn Boyd (Bob) Ocala, FL, James (Buddy) Connell, Jr (Connie) Orange City, FL, David Connell, Detroit, MI; her grandchildren Carrie Beth Creese (Mark) DeLand, James Long, Jr (Ann) DeLand, Michelle Willard (Mark) DeLand, Justin Long (Leslie) Seattle, WA, Jeffery Long, Jr (Kelly) Davie, FL, John Long II (Dawn) N. Charleston, SC, Kim Cardazzi (Moe) Congers, NY, Kris Clark (Ron Schatz) Andover, Ct, Kelly Dougherty (Joe), Palm Coast, Ann Connell (Chris Kinkead) Deltona, Jamie Connell, Detroit, MI, Katelyn Connell, Billings, MT; her dear friend Harry Bradley; her twenty-four great grandchildren; her three great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and loving friends. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 3rd at 10:00 am at the Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel in DeLand with the family receiving friends from 9:00-10:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at DeLand Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Halifax Hospice of Volusia /Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 attn.
