Robert J. Childs, 90, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed into the Lord's arms on December 12, 2012, at Florida Memorial Hospice, after a brief hospitalization. Born February 27, 1922 at Bethesda Hospital in Hornell, NY, he was the only child of the late Harold and Hazel Childs. Bob attended and graduated from Hornell High School in 1940, where he was drum major for the Hornell High School Band. He attended Purdue University, majoring in Chemical Engineering, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II. He married Irene Loohn, also of Hornell, NY, in 1944, at Spencer Methodist Church, and she predeceased him in 1986. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Lynn. He is survived by his wife Edith Childs. He is also survived by his children Robert M. (Janet) Childs, Patricia Dornsife, Allen (Glenda) Childs; six grandchildren (Krista Atiyeh, Amanda Young, Glen Dornsife Jr., Lindsay MacGeorge, Allen Childs Jr. & Patrick Childs); and five great-grandchildren. Bob served frequently as an Elder and Lay leader in various churches, and loved singing in his church choirs. Along with his uncle Ed Childs, he proudly worked to help plant the world famous Canisteo (NY) Living Sign, which remains today in Canisteo, NY. Bob was also a member of the Masonic Order. He began his career at Loohn's Cleaners in Hornell, working in the laundry and dry cleaning business. He then worked for Coyne Industrial Laundry, in Syracuse, NY and Erie, PA, and Eastern Textile Services in Easton, PA. Subsequently he owned and operated Menz Brother's Laundry & Dry Cleaning, in Bridgeton, NJ. He also served on the Board of Directors of Valley Federal Savings and Loan in Easton, PA. He sold his business in 1987, and retired to Ormond Beach, FL where he volunteered at Florida Hospital Memorial. There will be no calling hours, and a private memorial service will be held at Keuka Lake in Hammondsport, NY, at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Hornell High School Alumni Association ( or the Salvation Army at the location of your choice.
