Robert Walter Douglas, Sr. of Orange City, passed away Saturday, September 28th. Born in Charlotte, NC to the
late Isiah C. & Janie Douglas. He attended the local schools of Charlotte, graduating from Second Ward High School and attended Johnson C. Smith University. He joined the Air Force serving in the Korean War
. After his military service he married Dorothy Marie Norris in New York City. To this union two sons and four daughters were born. Robert was employed as Track Supervisor for Penn Central Railroad in New York. After retiring and locating to Orange City he enrolled in DBCC Cosmetology School and worked as a licensed cosmetologist. Robert was cited as being the first African-American business owner in Orange City. He was a faithful member of Bethel A. M. E. Church; past Worshipful Master of Springhill Masonic Lodge # 65. He was also a member of the Disabled Veterans of America Organization and former president of the Lincoln Cemetery Association. Robert leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Dorothy N. Douglas; son: Robert Jr., Orange City; daughters: Debra Douglas, Long Island, NY; Kimberly Frazier, Orange City; Vonda Anderson, Jacksonville, FL; Annette McPherson; one sister: Cletice Taylor, Knoxville, Tenn; a devoted cousin: Ida Mae McIntosh, Baltimore, MD; six grandsons, five granddaughters, five great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters, four godchildren; eight sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; a host of other loving and supportive family members and friends. His life will be celebrated 12 Noon Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Bethel AME Church, 226 E. Howry Ave., DeLand with Pastors Jeffery Dove and Willie Barnes, officiating. Visitation will be held (today) Friday from 4pm to 7pm at Cusack Mortuary and in the church from 10am until service time at Bethel. Interment, fraternal and military rites will follow the service at Deltona Memorial Gardens.
