Sam Behr

Sam Behr, age 86, of New Smyrna Beach, died Saturday at home. Born in Talladega, Alabama, Sam started coming to New Smyrna Beach 20 years ago from Winter Park. The retired owner of Behr Shoe Center in Orlando, he claimed that he could "Fit any human." He also was a commercial spokesman for Allied Discount Tires for 20 years and made famous the tag line "Tires Ain't Pretty," and a color commentator for the Orlando Thunder football team. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he played football and scored the first college touchdown for famed coach Bear Bryant. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Interlachen Country Club, and shot his age when he was 74. A life master bridge player, he and his wife were active with bridge activities at Smyrna Yacht Club. His other interests included dancing with his beloved wife and singing old standards. Survivors include his wife, Joanne; sons, Jeff Behr of New Smyrna Beach and Phillip Behr of Fresno, California; a daughter, Sheri Gray of Denver, Colorado; a step-son, George Paulk of Merritt Island; three step-daughters, Mayme Paul of Winter Park, Bette-Jo Foster of Palm Harbor, and Angie McKnight Randolph of Dallas, Texas; and 14 loving grandchildren. A celebration of Sam's life will be 2:00 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Settle-Wilder New Smyrna Beach Chapel. The celebration will then continue at Smyrna Yacht Club. Condolences may be sent to
