Stephen R. Ponder

Stephen R. Ponder, 53, of New Smyrna Beach, died on Feb. 23 at his home. He was a partner with Van Houten, Ponder & Hahl, P.A. in Daytona Beach. As a local attorney he practiced exclusively in civil litigation, emphasizing in commercial-related matters, business disputes, contract claims, real property disputes and selected personal injury claims. He attended University of Florida where he graduated with a B.A. in 1981, continuing his education at Florida State University receiving his J.D., and graduating with honors in 1984. He was admitted to Florida Bar in 1985 and was a Certified Circuit Mediator (1992-present), a member of the American Mediation Association, Inc. (1992-present) and was part of the Volunteer Lawyers Project (1985-present). Stephen was also a member of the Coronado shuffleboard club and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He had a heart of gold and always made the effort to make someone feel appreciated everywhere he went. Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years Linda, daughters, Morgan and Carling and a grandson Beau. Stephen's family will receive friends at The Daytona International Speedway in the Daytona 500 Club on Friday, February 28 from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm with a Celebration of his life beginning at 6:00 pm. The family has requested, as a way of remembering Stephen, that if you will be coming straight from work to please wear your brightest/wildest tie, if not, brightly colored clothing would be more than appropriate. Anyone who knows Stephen knows of his appreciation for bright, colorful clothing.
