Albert John (A.J.) Schoonmaker
Albert John Schoonmaker (A.J.), 79, passed away on August 3, 2018 from complications due to an extended illness. At the time of his death he was at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, FL. John was born in Hancock, NY at the home of his parents. John was married to Barbara Ferris and had four children: John (Lisa), Lisa Mead (Tony), Jamie (Heather), and Lynette; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. John married Sharon Piesecki Curtis in 1985 and became a stepfather to Wendy Mott (Bruce Fuller), step grandfather to two children and step great grandfather to three children. He was predeceased by his father Albert (1985), mother Helen Zerfass (2009) and younger brother Craig (1998). Surviving are his wife Sharon, Sister Margaret Evanitsky, brothers David and Gary. John is also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. Through his lifetime, John was a respected member of the Hancock Fire Department and Rescue Squad, American Legion, AmVets, Eagles, and the Moose. John worked at Becton Dickinson for 28 years as a Production Planner. John served many years in the Army Reserves and attained the rank of Staff Sargent. John loved to golf and was a diehard Giants and Yankees fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends up north and in Florida. Services will be held at the Emory United Methodist Church in Hancock, NY. Calling hours will be 1 pm to 3 pm on September 8th. The American Legion will present an honor guard service and a church service will follow. Donations may be made to Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, 150 Memorial Medical Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32164.
