Donald Berthold Haase, age 90, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Halifax Hospice. Don was born in Racine, August 28, 1923, son of the late Ernest and Irene (Nee: Kauss) Haase. He is a graduate of William Horlick High School, class of 1941. Don proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during the World War II. He graduated from training to fly BT13s in Waco, TX on March 12, 1944. On March 18, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Racine, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Marie Piotrowski. Don served as a pilot with the 386th Bomb Group in France in 1944-45, later flying C-47 cargo planes as pilot and co-pilot, transporting medical supplies to front line and hospitals, picking up wounded troops and delivering them to hospitals in England, and hauling gasoline. After V-E Day on May 8, 1945, he flew troops to the Riviera for R&R as part of the 320th Transport Group. Don was released from service in the Army Air Corps in San Antonio, TX in the summer of 1946 and moved back to Racine with his bride. He was employed in Racine at Massey Harris (Massey-Ferguson) and J.I. Case Co. In 1951, Don joined the 440th Squadron at Mitchell Air Force Base in Milwaukee and served in the Air Force Reserve. Don flew F-80 Shooting Star jets and later C-119 (Flying Boxcar) cargo planes with the 440th Squadron. In 1972 he left J.I. Case Co and joined the United States Air Force as Col. and Inspector General of the Air Force Reserve. Don and Henrietta relocated to Warner Robins AFB in Georgia. After completing the 4-year mission with the Air Force, Don extended his service in Warner Robins by working as a civil servant with the reserves until he retired in 1988 at age 65. Don's passion was golfing and he was a member of Cypress Head Golf Club since moving to Port Orange, FL in 1995. Don was an important and central part of many lives. He was loved by many, respected by all, and will be missed daily. Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Henrietta; his children, daughter Kathryn Helen Haase of Honolulu, HI; son Karl Ernest (Nancy) Haase of Newnan, GA; grandson Christopher (Sarah) Haase of Burlington, WI; great grandchildren Ayden, Owen and Lauren; son Paul Donald Haase of Aledo, TX; granddaughters Deanna Haase of Madison, WI, and Rebecca (Michael) Oster of Racine, WI. Don's brother Ray (92) of Eugene, OR, preceded him in death in 2013. A Memorial service for Donald will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, 5:00 p.m. at Cypress Head Golf Club, 6231 Palm Vista St., Port Orange, FL 32128. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at that time. In lieu of flowers, memorials to <> have been suggested.
