- Eugene "Jack" Gillis, age 76, of Edgewater, Florida, a retired master carpenter, died Sunday in Edgewater. Born in Alston, Georgia, Jack came to this area in 1949 from Soperton, Georgia. Jack attended school in Port Orange and the Live Oak High School (now New Smyrna Beach Senior High School). From 1953 until 1961, Jack was in the U. S. Navy Reserve and served in active duty from 1955 until 1957. He was a member of American Legion Post 17 of New Smyrna Beach, AESA (Ammunition Ship Association), and AARP. Jack's life can be summed up in his own words: "I had a long life and lived it the way I wanted, SO LAUGH, NO TEARS! Survivors include two sons, Dale of Port Orange, Florida and Kenneth of Umatilla, Florida; two daughters, Terri Gillis of Edgewater and Yvette Ridgdill of Little Elm, Texas; a brother, Billy Gillis of Edgewater; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce, and son, Eugene. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 19 at the Settle-Wilder New Smyrna Beach Chapel, with the Rev. Timothy McCardel and the Rev. Laura Berg officiating. Interment will follow in Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
