George Patrick Janan

George Patrick Janan, 61, of Port Orange, FL, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Halifax Hospital. He was born on March 16, 1952 to Elias and Marcelle Janan in Cairo, Egypt. His family moved to Daytona Beach from Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1954 and has been a lifelong area resident since. Growing up on the beachside, he attended Our Lady of Lourde, R.J. Longstreet Elementary, Seabreeze Junior High and Seabreeze High School where he graduated in 1971. George attended DBCC and the University of Florida where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1977. He earned his Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from Nova University in 1987. George started his career in education as a teacher, coach and administrator at his beloved alma mater, Seabreeze High School in 1978. While at Seabreeze, he taught math, physical education, driver education and was the head junior varsity football coach for five years, assistant varsity football coach for three years and assistant track coach for two years. George was also an administrator, Dean of Students, at Seabreeze for seven years until 1992. After 14 years working at Seabreeze High School he taught Physical Education at Read-Pattillo Elementary School in New Smyrna Beach, from 1992 until 1997. George went back to the high school level at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange where he finished his 36 year career in the Volusia County School system. In his 17 years at Spruce Creek, George served as the head football coach for two years, head boys track and field coach for six years, head freshman girls basketball coach for eight years, assistant football coach, assistant cross country coach and physical education department chairman for 12 years. George truly enjoyed his career and the opportunity he had to impact the thousands of students along his journey in a positive way. Coach Janan was named Volusia County High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year for the 2010 - 2011 school year. He was a past member of Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA), Volusia County Physical Education Teachers Association, and Volusia Association of School Administrators (VASA). He was a member of the Port Orange Church of Christ and previously was a member of the Holly Hill Church of Christ and Beville Road Church of Christ. George truly was a gentle giant not only in stature but the love he had for God, family, and friends. He loved the beach and growing up here. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on his Florida Gators, Miami Dolphins, Orlando Magic and New York Yankees. George stayed in contact with friends and high school classmates through the years and was involved in helping organize all of the high school reunions the Seabreeze Class of 1971 held. George's family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathy, daughters Kelly and Paula, son Brent, grandson Jordan Tomchuk, his brother Ray Janan, sister Brenda Pagano (Ron), many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his younger brother Paul Janan and parents Elias and Marcelle Janan. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 pm today (Friday, November 8th) at South Daytona Christian Church: 2121 Kenilworth Drive, South Daytona. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 9th at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Daytona - Downtown; 118 Palmetto Ave, Daytona Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to celebrate George's life.
