Harriet Velinda (Kurtz) Norris

Harriet Velinda (Kurtz) Norris died peacefully on 2 June 2018. Harriet Kurtz was born 30 April 1914 in Flint, MI, to Raymond and Viola (Owen) Kurtz. Through the Kurtz line, Harriet is a descendant of Stephen Hopkins, a leader of the Mayflower expedition who was characterized in Shakespeare's The Tempest. Harriet and her two sisters and two brothers grew up in Flint, MI spending most summers at a Lake Fenton cottage. Harriet went to Flint Jr College for a semester before entering Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. She became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1936. She met Donald F. Norris (her husband to be) in 1938 and married him the following year. Her three children Velinda, Don Jr. and David were born in Flint MI in the 1940s. After 40 years of family life in Michigan, she moved to Northport, FL. The family traveled much of the US during the growing years. Harriet and Don continued to visit family via RV from Florida. Harriet began volunteering with Hospice while in Northport, FL; continued while in Sebring, FL; and then in the Daytona Beach Area. She enjoyed playing bridge all her life. She liked to walk, read, knit, sew, craft and painted a number of pictures which adorned her apartment walls. Her proudest moments were graduating as an RN, having her daughter Velinda follow 25 years later as a Hurley RN, getting married, raising children, and seeing grandchildren and great grandchildren. Harriet is survived by a younger brother Walter O. Kurtz of Evansville, IN. Sisters Jeanne and Margaret and brother Ray predeceased her. Her daughter Velinda Jonson (and husband Ed) lives in Hudson, NH, son Donald Jr (and wife Gail) lives in Newport, MI, and son David lives in Flint, MI. She enjoyed living near her special niece Katie Dodd and having her companionship over the last 18 years. Harriet's grandchildren include Matthew (and Wendy) Jonson in Windham, NH; Heidi (and Brad) Ross in Grand Blanc, MI; Monica (and John) Sochor in Naples, FL; Kenneth (and Cindy) Norris in Oshkosh, NE; Daniel (and Judith) Norris in San Antonio, TX; Lori Piggott in Traverse City, MI; and Holli (and William) Andrews in Grand Blanc, MI. Harriet also had ten direct descendant great grandchildren and the latest addition, a great-great grandson. A Celebration of Life service is planned at Bishop's Glen Retirement Center, Holly Hill, FL at 2:00 pm on 24 June 2018.
