John (Buck) Welsh Buchanan, Jr. (90) died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, in New Smyrna Beach from complica-tions of Parkinson Disease. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of John Welsh Buchanan and Frances Ellen Durbin. Mr. Buchanan was an engineering graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman's School. He served as a Navy Lieutenant (jg) in the South Pacific aboard the USS Pollux during World War II, and then as a Lieutenant at Fort Campbell during the Korean War. After serving his country, John began his career in the steel industry, first at Jones and Loughlin Steel, and later at Youngstown Sheet and Tube. An avid golfer, bowler and bridge player, he was a loyal Steelers fan, enjoyed traveling, and anything that put him on or near the ocean. John was a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church, Sugar Mill Country Club and Smyrna Yacht Club. Mr. Buchanan is predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Fern (Mickey) Guinn, and a beloved stepdaughter, Vela Ryle. He is survived by his second wife, Marie Downey-Buchanan, with whom he shared 15 wonderful years; two daughters, Cathy (Jeff) Thompson, Stratford CT, and Robin (Rick) Stanback, Versailles KY; a sister, Dorothy Breyley, Cincinnati OH; a sister-in-law, Donita (John) Obermann, St. Louis, MO; a stepdaughter, Melissa (Tom) Bergstrom, Edina MN; a stepson, Jim Downey, St. Louis MO; grandchildren Janelle (Patrick) Biggs; Jocelyn (Victor) Crespo; Nathan (Cassandra) Stanback; and Danielle Stanback; four great-grand-children; and nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life is planned for 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2013, at Coronado Community United Methodist Church, 201 S. Peninsula Ave., New Smyrna Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to the National Parkinson Foundation, Fairgreen ALF of New Smyrna Beach, Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity or Coronado Community United Methodist Church.
