Mary Archer Whitehead passed away quietly on June 11, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Charles J. Whitehead, her sister Alberta Smith, and her parents Catherine and Herbert Archer. Born on July 13, 1924 in New Rochelle, New York, Mrs. Whitehead was a founding member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in New Smyrna Beach and was very active in many professional organizations, including the Pilot Club, PTA and the Association of College Women. After raising her two daughters and supporting her husband's military career, she returned to college and earned her bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University. Mrs. Whitehead retired after a long and distinguished career as a special education teacher in Norfolk, Virginia and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She is survived by her daughters Mary-Margaret Ruegsegger (Gary) and Candice W. Brady; three grandchildren Donna Jo Brady (Joseph), Richard C. Fuller, and Christopher R. Whitehead (Erica); and great- granddaughter Mayahuel Whitehead. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Friday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend John S. Murray, officiating.
