Patricia St. Clair Reed Wade, age 85, of Holly Hill, Florida, died at home on December 11, 2012, following a long illness. Pat was born October 25, 1927, near Centreville, Mississippi, to Billie Blanche St. Clair Reed and Thomas Gresham Reed. She received a degree in English from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where she met, and soon married, Jesse Hugh Wade. She later earned a master's degree in English education from the University of Central Florida. She and Jess had been married for 65 years at the time of her death. Pat's lifelong passion for teaching guided her to a career working first with the deaf, then as a teacher of English and reading. In 1961, she and Jess moved to the west coast of Florida, where she taught at Dunedin Junior High School. She was active in the Methodist church, and helped facilitate the construction of the First United Methodist Church of Dunedin. In 1966, she continued her teaching career at Mainland Senior High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, from which she retired in 1988. In addition to her church activities, she also volunteered by reading to the blind for some years at the Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. During her time at Mainland Senior High, she sponsored the Key Club and for many years served as the social coordinator. Until the last year of her life, Pat was an avid reader of news, magazines, short fiction and novels. Her love of the English language also manifested itself creatively in the writing of poetry, and a volume of her poems was published by her son in 2006 under the title she chose: Pedestrian Poetry. Known lovingly as Mrs. Wade by her students, Pat by her friends and husband, and Mom by her children, Jeffry Stephen Wade, George Reed Wade and Elizabeth St. Clair Wade, she is survived by her husband and children; sister Mrs. Bettye Lynn Reed Cater; and brother Lt. Col. Nathan Keith Reed. Pat's great big heart and love for students, family and friends will remain as a lasting tribute to a life that touched so many in service and care. A memorial service will take place at 12 noon on December 21, 2012, at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care.
