Robert Hayes Oakes
02/21/1926 - 09/09/2018
Robert Hayes Oakes, 92, passed away on September 9, 2018 under the comforting care of Hospice. Born to Laura and Robert Oakes, Sr in Upland, Del. Co Pennsylvania on February 21, 1926. After high school, Robert joined the Marine Corp where he proudly served in the Mid Pacific Islands for his country. Returning from service he briefly worked for CF Braun and Brown and Root Eng. Firms; at night studying courses from Temple University. An offer came from Catalytic Engr. Inc. in Philadelphia; he accepted and knew he had found his career home. He remained with Catalytic until his retirement to Ormond Beach in 1982. His assignments were mostly government contracts and took him many places. He was six years on the ATLAS and Minute Man programs in Cheyenne, WY and Rapid City S.D. then to Cape Canaveral, FL for the historic launches of Apollo 7-11. To him, it was a privilege to be a part of history. Needless to say he gave his loving family an exciting life. His last assignment before retiring was Administrative Manager at Catalytic Toledo Ohio Office. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Edna Marcella, daughter, Linda Freymann of Ocala, FL; two sons, Steven R. (Ann) Oakes of Orinda, CA, Martin E. (Tammie) Oakes of Wasco, Oregon; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters; Laura Fultz, Reading, PA and May Ibach, Pottstown, PA. Robert was a past member of the Rocky Mtn. #46 Masonic Lodge, Korein Temple Scottish Rite, Halifax River Yacht Club and Treasurer for a term at Friends of the O.B. Library. Robert made many friends in his past, but was happiest with the friends he made here. He loved the parties, dinners, dances, lunches with the boys on Friday, he loved the adage- make new friends but keep the old-some are silver, some are gold. Donations can be made to Florida Hospital Hospice Care. Private family services planned. Arrangements are under the care of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home-Ormond Beach.
