Rosemary Payne Smith
Rosemary Payne Smith passed December 4, 2013 in Port Orange, Florida. She was born on August 17, 1925 to Joseph and Stella Frances Thomas Payne in Indianapolis, Indiana. She had two older brothers, William and Joseph, both now deceased. A Celebration of her life will be held at Lohman Funeral Home, 1201 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange, FL 32127, on December 12, 2013 at 3:00. Rosemary grew up on a family farm in Greenwood, Indiana. She graduated from Center Grove High School in 1943. As a young adult, she lived in Zionsville, Indiana where she was employed by Dow Chemical Company as a certified Histology Technician in the pathology and toxicology department for several years. In her free time, Rosemary was an artist and enjoyed painting the woods and landscapes of Indiana. Rosemary married Herman W. Smith (born 1922, deceased Dec. 6, 2005) on March 1, 1973. They relocated to Port Orange, Florida in 1985. Rosemary was an active member of the Port Orange United Church of Christ where she served as a soprano singer in the choir. She volunteered countless hours working in the church's thrift shop and serving the church in many other ways. As a passionate activist for nature and animals, Rosemary was a member of the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, SPCA, and the Humane Society. Rosemary is survived by her stepdaughter, Carol Lockwood of Port Orange, FL; four nieces Deborah White, Mary Frances Miller, Caron Ann Collester, Theresa Ellen (Payne) Mitchell; and two nephews Dennis Kevin Payne and Michael Dean Payne.
