Walter Scott Dunlop (Scotty) of Flagler Beach, a retired Volusia County P.E. teacher/ coach (Holly Hill Junior High and Tomoka Elementary), passed away on March 30, 2013. He was born in Rupert, West Virginia on July 11, 1938. In 1944 he moved to the Daytona Beach area where he attended Seabreeze High School and was known as a legend and hometown football hero. Scotty was a versatile mainstay of the Seabreeze High School Football team and also a standout in basketball. He was awarded the Volusia County Athlete of the Year in 1956-1957. He received 36 football scholarship offers and chose to attend the University of Florida. After playing freshman football at Florida, he suffered a major knee injury which ended his career. He transferred and graduated from Bethune-Cookman University. Scotty enjoyed playing golf, camping, going on cruises, woodworking and the Florida Gators! He was a member of the Volusia County Lifeguard Corp guarding on the beach from 1955-1957. He is survived by his sons: James (Cocoa Beach), Daniel (Cairo, Georgia), Robert (Bunnell), Brian (Sunland, California), his daughter: Kristen Bertha (Palm Coast), sisters: Bonnie Lagano (Albert Scott) (Seminole, Florida) and Donna Hiatt (Jerry) (Daytona Beach); five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Seabreeze United Church of Christ, 501 N. Wild Olive Ave., Daytona Beach, today (Thursday April 4 , 2013) at 3:30 pm with Chaplain Jim Smith officiating.
