Karoly "Charlie" Kanyo, 44, passed away Nov. 24, 2012, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. A celebration of his life was held Dec. 1 in DeLand. Charlie was born Sept. 23, 1968, in Pecs, Hungary. He came to the United States seven years ago. He lived in Daytona Beach to work on his project to publish his book Around the World on a Motorcycle 1928-1936, and have it translated from Hungarian to English. He was thrilled when Whitehorse Press printed and sold his book in U.S. bookstores. One year later, he met his wife, Colette, and moved to DeLand. Charlie loved to travel. He was well-known for traveling all over the world on his motorcycle. Working in the over-the-road trucking business for more than 20 years gave him the chance to travel this country and see all its beauty. Survivors are his wife of six years, Colette Kanyo of DeLand; his daughter Karolina Kanyo; his son Karoly Kanyo of Pecs; three stepgrandchildren, Chase and Trent Stine, and Brennen Strickland, all of DeLand; two stepdaughters, Adrienne Strickland and her husband, Andrew, of DeLand and Anitra Coppolino and her husband Tony, of Fort Myers; and stepson Dean Slanker of DeLand. We will all greatly miss Charlie, but knowing we have many fond memories is a source of comfort.
