Jewel Kendrick Lay was born April 8, 1924 in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee to the late J.B. and Joyce Kendrick. She was raised on a farm with her 3 brothers and 2 sisters during the depression. Lots of people came by looking for a meal, and her family never turned anyone away. Maybe that's where Jewel developed the generous spirit that she maintained all of her life. The first in her family to graduate from high school, she worked most of her life as a secretary. Most of her career was with the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Her other career was being a mother; she was the best, and if she got discouraged (how could she not?) she never let it show. She never took day off or retired from that job. Jewel loved music and was a good pianist. When she was a child she had a short career singing on radio with her sisters and brother. A great cook, Jewel helped with food for the Metropolitan Bridge Club where her son worked. Some of her favorite recipes are still floating around. She was a good Christian who read the Bible every night. She attended Edgemoor Baptist Church until she moved to Florida to live with her son. Her health precluded her from attending church for the last couple of years, but she contributed to her son's church, Our Lady of Lourdes, and read the Bible and the Bulletin faithfully. Jewel leaves her son, Spike Lay, two grandchildren, Joel Lay and Stacy Lay, and one great grandchild, Avery Lay. She also has a sister, Bonnie Palmer and a brother, Mont Kendrick. She survived her other sister, Emma Norman and two of her brothers, John and E.J. Kendrick. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to: KICKO (Knoxville Inner City Kids Outreach), P.O. Box 14487, Knoxville, TN 37914, (865) 523-4956, info@kicko.org. KICKO does lots of good work with inner city kids, and Jewel's grandson, Joel, of whom she was very proud, is on the board and does a lot of good work with the kids. Memorial service will be held in Tennessee. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Ormond. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com.
