gan teaching in a one-room school house at age 19. She eventually taught all grades from 1st to 8th but her favorite class for many years were 5th graders at Pikeville Elementary. She once said she loved 5th graders for the way the boys and girls despised each other at the beginning of the year yet by the end were showing a sweet interest in each other. She loved teaching and showed a lifelong interest in her former students. She was strongly committed to furthering education in Eastern Kentucky. She earned her teaching certificate, her bachelor's degree from then Pikeville College and her master's from Morehead State University. She and her husband were active in developing the medical school and business college at University of Pikeville. In 2010 she was enrolled in the Pikeville College Distinguished Educators Hall of Fame. After her retirement from teaching, she continued her career as homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and then great-grandmother. She was a longstanding member of First Baptist Church of Pikeville. Jean loved playing bridge with her many good friends, canning vegetables from the home garden, and cooking for her family. She will be sadly missed.
