Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Ann Hawkins Benjamin, 65, Daytona Bch, who passed on Saturday, April 26, 2014, will be 11 AM, Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with Eld. Robert Walker, Jr., Pastor, Helping Hands Ministry of Hope, delivering the main eulogy. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5-8:30 PM today (Fri, May 2) at RJ Gainous Funeral Home with family receiving friend from 6-7 PM and viewing will be from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Saturday. Mrs. Benjamin also known as "Shua" was born in Gulf Hammock, FL on Aug. 4, 1948 to the late John and Mineola E. Hawkins. When "Shua" was very young the family moved to Daytona Bch. She graduated in 1967 from the former Campbell Street High School. Upon graduation, she attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She transferred to Florida Memorial College in Miami, FL where she obtained a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice in 1972. She taught school in Freeport Grand, Bahamas for a while before moving back to Daytona Bch to raise her daughter Fallon Davis. She was employed many wonderful years with the State of Florida Dept. of Juvenile Justice and retired in 2005. She was a member of the Mid-town Redevelopment Board, AmVets Ladies Auxiliary, and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Hawkins and a sister, Patricia Ann Hawkins Cepeda. She is survived by a loving daughter, Fallon M. Davis; sister, Rena E. Zellner; brother, John Hawkins Jr.; aunt, Wilhelmer Harris; 3 grandchildren: Kayon A. Davis, Keelan A. Barnes, and Keloni' A. Reed; 8 godchildren: Sherry Powell, Celeste Jones, Latasha Felton, Leander Kinderick, Lindsay Davis, Audrick Drummond, Alrick Drummond, and Corey Hill, Jr.; favorite cousin: Pharstine Hampton; best friend: Shirley Armstrong; godsister: Mildred Eldridge; special companion: Hosea Geter; many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted and loyal friends both far and near. Ms. Benjamin was my 5th grade teacher at Mary Star of the Sea, Freeport, Bahamas. I am so sorry for the loss of such an influential woman who strived to bring out the best in her students.
