Lessie Bell Smokes Sanders was born in DeLand March 9, 1945 born to the late Lester and Lillie Mae Smokes. She graduated from Euclid High School, class of 1963 and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, DeLand. She moved to New York and worked for New York Telephone Company and was a member of the Historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, serving as an Usher. Lessie went on to join the Army; traveling across the country for a period of 12 years. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia to be near her two daughters, Angela Sanders-Glover (Steven), Powder Springs, GA; Sharla Sanders-Callender (Anthony), Hiram, GA; three brothers: Grady Smokes (Carrie), DeLand; Readell Smokes (Martha), San Antonio, TX; Leroy Smokes (Brenda), Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Maurice and Bryce, Powder Springs, GA; Briani and Orion Hiram, GA; Javon, Houston, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved her and will miss her dearly. Her life will be celebrated 11am Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, 710 West Cincinnati Avenue, DeLand, Pastor Terry Brown and Thomas Robinson, officiating. Visitation will be held today (Friday) from 4pm to 7pm at Cusack Mortuary and Saturday from 10am until service time at the church. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens.
