Funeral Services for Reverend Milton Lawrence Curry, Sr.,88, Daytona Beach, who passed on Monday, June 2, 2014, will be 3 PM, Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Michael Mitchell, Pastor, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Daytona Memorial Park South. Calling hours are from 5-7 PM, today (Fri, June 6) at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church with family receiving friends from 6 - 7 PM; viewing will be from 1:30 PM until service time at the church on Saturday. Rev. Curry was born to the late Lawrence Curry and Viola Green on September 23, 1925 in Plant City, FL. He retired from General Electric after 25 years of service. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Rev. Curry was a graduate of Hungerford Prep School, Winter Park, FL. He matriculated to Bethune-Cookman College where he received an AA Degree in Psychology in 1950. He received a Doctor of Divinity in 1999 from United Theological Seminary, Orlando, FL. He was a former member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for over 26 years where he served as an Associate Minister under Dr. J. C. Bentley. He was licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in 1966 by Reverend E. C. Tillman, ordained by Dr. J. C. Bentley and was called to Pastor at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Holly Hill, FL in 1973. His religious affiliations with the Mt. Zion Northeast Coast Association included: 2nd Vice Moderator, former Past President North End Congress, former 1st Vice President North End Congress, former Consultant for Youth Department, Past Chief Recording Secretary, and former Dean of Congress of Christian Education. His community affiliations included: First Black Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Daytona Beach Housing Authority; Charter Member of Madison Height Improvement Association; Past Vice Chairman, Volusia County Community Action Agency - Equal Opportunity Officer; President - Baptist Ministers Fellowship Conference - Greater Halifax Area; Unofficial Chaplain for the United Way. Reverend Curry is described as "a man who never met a stranger". People always said that he could make a joke out of any situation. He enjoyed fishing. Reverend Curry was preceded in death by a daughter: Claudette; sisters: Pancita and Marie and a brother Lawrence. Reverend Curry leaves to cherish his memory, the love of his life, a loving, caring and devoted wife of 58 years, Erma; 4 sons: Edward, Milton, Jr., Milton Ian and Gerald, all of Daytona Bch; 7 daughters: Laverne, Erma P., both of Daytona Bch, Toni, Atlanta, GA, Cynthia L., Plant City, FL, Denise, NY, Cynthia J., Live Oak, FL, Gloria Jean; 3 sisters: Emma Jean, Ruby C. and Mercedes, all of Plant City, FL; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
