Raymond L. Johnson, 79, of Daytona Beach Shores died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at home. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 3pm at First United Methodist of Ormond Beach. Born in Akron, Ohio, Ray attended Springfield High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps for 3 years. He attended the University of Akron on the G.I. Bill, graduating tops in his class with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. During a 1961 job interview with GE in Syracuse, NY, his military radar experience was noticed and he was offered a job in Cape Canaveral. He took it without negotiating any terms. While there, he received his master's degree in space technologies from Brevard Engineering College. He was part of the team that developed the Minuteman, Titan, Saturn missile systems, and the Apollo space program at Cape Canaveral during the early 1960's through the early 1970's. When the Apollo program closed in the early 1970's, he was reassigned to Daytona Beach. The Johnsons stayed there until 1982 when he was reassigned. They moved 17 times in 32 years with GE. After retiring, he moved back to Daytona Beach. After retiring, Ray was both the church treasurer and treasurer of his condo board. He also enjoyed working with Halifax Habitat for Humanity and the GE Volunteers /Elfuns. Ray was pre-deceased by his parents Roy and Adelia Johnson and his brother Russell. Survivors include his wife of 55 years Donna, his daughter Laura, sisters Joan (Bill) Marshall, Pat Warner, and Carole Jarvis, and many loving nieces and nephews. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Halifax Hospice nurses Melissa and Mandy and Visiting Angel Tamera. International Speedway Blvd., Second Floor, Daytona Beach, FL 32114 and Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
