John J. Smith "Jack", 88 of Palm Coast, died July 19, 2014 at Florida Hospital Memorial in Daytona Beach after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Jack was born June 29, 1926 in Scranton, PA, son of William and Florence Mooney Smith. Jack grew up in Honesdale, PA, and upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served as a Seaman 1st class aboard the USS Philadelphia, a Brooklyn class Light Cruiser, and the USS Solar, a Buckley class Destroyer escort. Jack received the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the European African Mid East Medal, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Following his discharge, he resided in New Jersey, there he attended Rutgers University and Newark College of Engineering. During his 47 years as a civil engineer he worked in NJ, PA, NC, FL and Cairo, Egypt. In 1993 he then retired. Golfing, reading, his dogs, and visiting with his family were his favorite pastimes. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of 64 years, Edna McClenahen Smith, "Betty". They were married on June 10, 1950. He is also survived by his son, Terry Smith of Exton, PA and his wife, Chris and their son, Andrew; his daughter, Kate Smith of Highland Park, NJ and her husband, Bob White, and Kate's daughter, Tara McDonnell and her husband, Sean and their daughter, Madison Ryleigh; his daughter, Flo Smith of Shirley, MA and her wife, Janet Kennedy. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Smith, his two sisters, Mary and Catherine Smith, and his beloved daughter, JoAnne Smith. Family and friends will be received Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South in Flagler Beach. Funeral services will be private.
