Elizabeth "Lizzy" Patricia Griffith (nee Smith) of New Smyrna Beach, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2014. Born on September 23, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA, she graduated from Saint Joseph Academy in St. Augustine, FL, attended St. Petersburg Junior College, and completed certifications at Lydia Houston Beauty School in Houston, TX. After returning to Florida, she obtained real estate salesman and broker's licenses. Over 14 years, she worked for Hudson Real Estate Co. and later for Lovell Real Estate in Edgewater. Liz retired as a full time school crossing guard for Volusia County after 21 years. Her last post was at Canal Street and US 1 in New Smyrna Beach. She owned a cleaning service for condominiums and private homes, cooked meals for house-bound elderly, and even tackled re-upholstery work on the side. When she had Liz time, she made gorgeous quilts, nurtured flowering plants both in her yard and her home, took classical guitar lessons, read books, painted, and spoiled her pets rotten. She raised two children, Michael Leroy and Elizabeth Renee Griffith, whom she loved deeply. Liz was heartbroken that as adults they had no contact with her. She is survived by a small but loyal army of friends. With Lizzy leading the way, they took a spectacular journey as she adapted to life after a severe stroke in 2007. Although Liz was a loner of sorts, she made many new friends especially at Ocean View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where she lived for over 6 years. Strong-willed to the end, Liz ruled her world making decisions, giving orders and communicating more with "yes but no" words than most people could imagine. In lieu of flowers, Liz asked that you do a kindness for someone else today. Any memorials may be made to Ocean View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center 2810 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169 or Halifax Humane Society, 2354 West LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32120. Condolences online may be made at: www.settlewilderfuneralhome.com
