J. Shirley Pisegna, age 90, of New Smyrna Beach, died Sunday, August 17 at Shands Hospital, Gainesville. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Mrs. Pisegna came to this area 30 years ago from Feeding Hills, Massachusetts. A retired bookkeeper for the Chancery of Springfield, Massachusetts, Mrs. Pisegna was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of New Smyrna Beach and the Council of Catholic Women. She was an award winning gardener and specialized in growing orchids. Other interests included past membership in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Red Hat Ladies, collecting angel figurines, and working with stained glass with her late husband Cedric. She was devoted to her family and also to her cat Precious, who was her constant companion. Survivors include her son, Father Cedric J. Pisegna of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Frances Caruso of Port Orange and Evelyn Pisegna-Cook of Severna Park, Maryland; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 20) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with her son, Father Cedric J. Pisegna officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Post Office Box 729, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170 to help elderly women in need.
