Lena V. (Lee) Maroney (nee Bordonaro) of Ormond Beach passed away on Wednesday, August 20 at the age of 92. Lee was born on February 11, 1922 to Angelo and Angela Bordonaro in Syracuse, New York and grew up there as one of six children. Always a believer in the value of education, Lee excelled in elementary and secondary school, going to secretarial school on a scholarship. One of the most exciting periods in her life was being chosen to leave Syracuse and work for the FDIC in Chicago during World War II. Following the war, Lee returned to Syracuse, marrying her sweetheart William J. (Bill) Maroney, whom she had known since childhood, on September 7, 1946. Lee moved to Ormond Beach in 1962 when General Electric transferred her husband Bill to Daytona Beach in support of the Apollo Space program. Here she raised her six children, always putting her family's needs before her own, and encouraging and supporting them in their endeavors. Her homemade chocolate chip cookies always seemed to be on the table for snacks. Once her youngest children were in high school, Lee went back to school herself and earned the nursing degree she had always wanted, working at a local nursing home for over ten years. In retirement, Lee was a devoted attendee of the YMCA's Silver Sneakers exercise group, but her greatest pleasure was visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was nothing she liked better than caring for or playing with a baby or toddler. Predeceased by her brother Sam, her sister Teresa and her most beloved husband of 61 years, Bill Maroney, Lee is survived by her children: William F. Maroney (Charlene) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Kate Maroney of South Daytona, FL; Janis Maroney, Judith Maroney, and Philip (Pamela) Maroney of Ormond Beach; and Cheryl (Robert) Incandela of Virginia Beach, VA. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Patrick, Ryan, Heather, Sara, David, Sam, Cody, Loren, Vincent, Richard, and Amy; great-grandchildren: Frances, Cynthia, Alexa, Connor and John William; and siblings Josephine Bordonaro, Charles (Mary) Bordonaro and Carolyn Chini. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 on Monday, August 25, 2014 at Dale Woodward Funeral Home, 167 Ridgewood Avenue, Holly Hill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 11a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1014 N. Halifax Ave., Daytona Beach.
