The Celebration of Life for Selest Slater, 89, will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Allen Chapel AME Church, 580 George W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach, with Rev. Nathan Mugala, Pastor, Officiating. Visitation will be Friday (today), June 18, at RJ Gainous Funeral Home from 5-9 PM with the family receiving friends from 6-8 PM. A viewing will also be from 9:30 AM until service time at the church on Saturday. The lives of Arthur and Nan Fowler Bonner were blessed on Nov. 22, 1920 in Bell County, TX. On this blessed day was born a daughter and she was named Selest. Selest moved with her family to Waco, TX at a young age. It was there she confessed a hope in Christ and was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Her family moved from Waco to Ft. Worth, TX and settled. There she continued her Christian walk with the Lord at the Old Rising Star Baptist Church. Selest left Ft. Worth in 1945, and made her home in Daytona Beach. There, she met the love of her life, Robert Slater and joined him in Christian love. She changed her faith from Baptist to African Methodist Episcopal (AME), becoming a member of Allen Chapel AME Church. Their union brought 7 children whose love can never be measured. Robert and Selest remained inseparable and he affectionately called her "Sweetheart" everyday of his life. Selest worked as a maid in housekeeping at beachside motels, and retired from the Outrigger Motel in Ormond Beach. She took pride in her work; never missing a day. She was a kind and compassionate person and greeted everyone with a smile. Selest loved the Lord and her church and will be remembered for her gentle spirit. She loved being with her family, cooking, watching the Food Network, sitcoms, going shopping, eating out and receiving fresh-cut flowers. The Angel of the Lord was sent to carry the soul of Selest back to God Wednesday, June 9 2010. There, she was reunited with her parents; husband, Robert; son, Bobby; grandson, Henry; sisters, Opal, Jeana and Maxine; and brothers, Erwin and Leroy. She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving children: Elnora Turman, Ft. Worth, TX, Verlinda Johnson, Sherly Johnson, Donell (Patricia) Slater, Henry (Colette) Slater, Cynthia Slater, all of Daytona Beach; 13 grandchildren: Ricky Compton, Diann Zamora, Pamela Thomas, all of Ft. Worth, TX, Kenneth (Bonita) Flynt, San Diego, CA, Keona (Sean) Barnwell, Jacksonville, FL, Verlinda Davis, Tampa, FL; Gina (Ulysses) Fountain, Angel Kitt, Ivory Estes, Larry (LaTosha) Slater, Lovely (Daniel) Flournoy, Jacinta Davis, Robert Slater, all of Daytona Beach; 18 grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed. R.J. Gainous Funeral Home, Inc., 804 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
