Mary "Jane" Engel, 85, a longtime Ormond Beach Teacher, passed away May 25, 2011 after a brief illness. Jane was born and primarily raised in Canton, Ohio, but spent three grade school years in Brooklyn, New York during "the depression". She graduated from McKinley High School in 1944 and from Ohio State University in 1948. Jane married Ray Steineck after graduation and moved to Portsmouth, Ohio and taught school two years. She moved to the Daytona Beach area in 1959. In 1963, she began teaching at Osceola Elementary and married Reuben Engel the same year. She received her Master's degree in Education from Stetson University in 1967. Jane remained at Osceola until her retirement in 1989 after 26 years of Exceptional Service. Retirement was not for Jane, as she soon became a Substitute Teacher and a very active member in the Pilot Club, where she stayed involved until her death. She joined the Auxiliary at Memorial Medical Center for over 15 years after becoming widowed in 1992 volunteering over 2500 hours. She attended Central Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and Jubilee Singers. In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed travel, playing Bridge with "the girls", and dining out often with friends. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Casper and Barbara, husband, Reuben and sister, Lillian. She leaves behind her loving family: son, Joe(y) Steineck of Jacksonville; daughter, Barbara (Mike) Paytas; grandson, Michael (Jennie) Paytas; granddaughter, Leigh Ann (Gary) Miller; the four great grandchildren she so lovingly adored: Ty and Parker Paytas and Kaleigh and Logan Miller, all of Ormond Beach; brother, David (Randee) Visinger of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; several cousins, nieces, nephews; and a host of dear friends, all whom will miss her dearly and cherish her memory. Donations may be made in her name to: Pilot Club of the Halifax Area, Inc., 324 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114, Halifax Humane Society, 2364 W. LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32120 or PFLAG of Jacksonville, P.O. Box 2971, Jacksonville, FL 32203. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 5th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service, Monday June 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, 167 Vining Court in Ormond Beach. Entombment will follow at Shady Rest Cemetery.
