Samuel James "Jim" Bevel Jr., 84, DeLand, departed this life April 30, 2012. Funeral services will be held 4pm Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Greater Union First Baptist Church, 240 South Clara Avenue, DeLand, Pastor Troy A. Bradley Sr., officiating. Archbishop David A. Jones will deliver the main eulogy. Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 4pm to 7pm at J. E. Cusack Mortuary and Tuesday from 3pm unitl service time at Greater Union. Burial will follow the service at Union Cemetery. Born in DeLand, Florida to the late Samuel James Bevel Sr. and the late Katie Lou Richardson. He graduated from Euclid High High School and Florida Normal College in St. Augustine. He was also the drummer for Horace Monroe and the Kings of Rhythym. "Jim" worked 25 years as a Truck Driver for Volusia County Schools. At an early age, he joined Greater Union First Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force, serving in World War II, receiving the Victory Medal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Bevel. He leaves to cherish his wife of 61 years, Myra Althea Hall Bevel, DeLand; son: Kevin A. Bevel, DeLand; daughters: Dr. Beverlyn Jones (Archbishop David Jones), Tampa, FL; Alma Jones (Ronald), Miami, FL; aunt: Ella Mae Meeks, Opa Locka, FL; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
