Funeral service for Louise Buckels, age 86, of New Smyrna Beach, who died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 4 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel, with her niece, Darlene Dennette officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery, Edgewater. Calling hours will be 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach chapel. Born April 3, 1926 in Lakeland, Florida to The Reverend J.K. and Leona De Golyer, she traveled and sang with her parents as they moved from town to town building new "Church of God" ministries. That was until she met the love of her life, Phillip Buckels; their marriage lasted for 60 years, through his service as a Navy Seabee in World War II, and the homes he built for his family as they moved around Florida, where work was available. They finally settled in New Smyrna Beach where his aunt, Gladys Bates had a kindergarten school. In 1967 Mrs. Buckels opened the first surf shop in New Smyrna located at 216 Flagler, then moved it to 324 Flagler in 1968 and morphed it into an all purpose rental shop. She and her daughter, Phyllis owned and operated P.J.'s Cut and Curl; years later she opened The Bamboo Pub at 322 Flagler. Mrs. Buckels also opened "A Ceramic Workshop" in her home where she made beautiful creations and taught others in ceramics, and she was also an accomplished seamstress. Louise was very active in her community, serving as past president of ABWA, Elks Ladies and Beachside Business Association, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the Moose Ladies. Survivors include one son, Gary of New Smyrna Beach; 12 grand children; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Buckels was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip, and two children, Phyllis Landrove and John Robert Buckels. Condolences may be made online at www.settlewilderfuneralhome.com
