Virginia Rooney Kearney passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2013. Virginia, the youngest of three children, was born on December 20, 1925, to James T. and Anna Marie (McMahon) Rooney in Portland, Oregon. Virginia attended St. Mary's Academy in Portland where she was Student Body President, and received her nursing degree from University of Portland/St. Vincent's Hospital in 1947. She received advanced education to be certified as a Nurse Anesthetist in Rochester, New York. Virginia worked as a nurse in Portland, Boise (during one of the last polio epidemics), San Francisco and Spokane. She married Robert (Bob) Kearney on September 12, 1953, in Portland, and spent the next 59 years with Bob, living in Spokane, Portland, Astoria, Suburban Chicago, Longwood, Florida, Los Gatos, California and, finally, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where she lived for the past 31 years. Virginia was warm and helpful, readily making friends with those she met. She enjoyed spending time in Oregon, watching the Columbia River, visiting with friends and family and being on the beach. Virginia is survived by Bob; her children, Molly and Patrick (his wife, Lori); and her grandson, Thomas; as well as her niece and grandniece, Anna Marie and Collette Myer. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Jimmy, and her sister Joan. A Mass celebrating the Holy Eucharist will be held on February 22, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 4000 South Atlantic Avenue, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, 32169. Burial will follow in Oregon at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon 97103.
